Donnie Ripley: I was reading up on lightweight smaller starters for our engines. So would a starter from a Magnum style small block (5.2 ie) bolt into our B R/B blocks?

Curt: The lightweight (Denso)starters used on 1988 and newer 3.9 V6s and 89-90 and newer 5.2s and 5.9s will bolt right on to earlier V8s.

George: I upgraded to a light weight starter while my 440 was still in the "donor" car. I was impressed by how well that little thing cranked the stock 440. Now that I have rebuilt and boosted compression on the engine, it still cranks just like before, even with a trunk mounted battery and long cables! These starters also clear the headers real nice! I got the starter from AutoZone and paid a big core charge, it's a better deal to buy one from a vendor and save the core charge. Mancini Racing has them under P/N MRE644 for 114.95 with no core charge. Just call 1-800-843-2821 and you'll have it in a day or so!

Bob Spelic: John Paseman also sells a mini-starter that works well. I used it in my race Charger last season, and it had no problem with the 13:1 compression.

It is much better than the big starter. If you remove the header bolts and move the header all the way forward you can wiggle the starter out WITHOUT lifting the engine. I could not get a standard starter out without removing the header and lifting the engine. With the mini-starter you don’t have to lift the engine. In fact it may be possible to get it out without removing the header, but I just removed it from the engine and moved it forward before I ever went under the car. My headers are Heddman 1 7/8 inch ones. With 2” headers I think that removing them from the engine and sliding them forward would be a must.

I just checked my last bill from US Car Tool (John Paseman) and the mini-starter was $70 including shipping and no core charge. It is a rebuilt unit, but I had no problems with it.

Editor's Note: John also has starter relays for $15.00. Go to US Car Tool and look for the 66-67 Charger section or email him at [email protected]
