Q & A

Mike: I have a 66 with A/C and my heater control valve is the one with the tubes one over the other. I've also seen some 66's with the tubes side by side. I'm not sure which one is correct but it seems to me they both will work. I'll be looking for one myself since mine started leaking. It hasn't worked right since I got the car almost 5 years ago. What I did was install a shut off valve inline and that worked just fine until the heater control valve started to leak this year. What I did now was bypass the entire heater control valve and ran my heater lines like the car was a non A/C car. It still has the inline shut off valve in place and it works just fine but I'd still like to get the correct set up in place. Has anyone checked with NAPA to see if they carry this valve??

Roger Bohl: My 66 A/C valve [side by side] was leaking just before the Charger reunion. Went to NAPA they had the round diaphragm [Don't remember if they had the complete valve ] by the part # 660 1000 for $6.55. Removed valve with the capillarity tube from the bottom of the heater box and temp. cable. Straightened the 4 tabs, removed the top assy. Straightened the 3 heavy tabs. Replaced the rubber diaphragm. Here is where you will need 2 men and a small elephant to put it back together. The new diaphragm is thicker or has a ridge on it, [ try to remove ridge, to make it easier to reassemble ??????] Hope you have a vice to hold it while bending the 3 heavy tabs back over. I have a control valve with tubes on the top. Also the A/C bracket to adjust the temperature I have found out if I push the lever for heat it closes the valve, and if I shut the lever it opens the valve. It all depends on if the controlling assy. is mounted to the right or left of the inlet tube. My heater didn't work. I had to remove the inlet hose and push the valve off of it's seat with a pencil. It was stuck shut do to lack of use. Another thing to check out is if the lever on the control valve is on the top or the bottom. Make sure the new valve is configured the same.
